A musical piece surviving in part, a transcription dated back to about 200 b.C., written on a papyrus. Euripides, just as most of the poets of ancient drama, wrote himself the music of his works.

Hymn to Nemesis

Mesomedes, 2nd c. A.D.
Mesomedes was a musician from Crete, official composer of emperor Adrian. There have survived four of his works for voice and strings. This hymn is dedicated to the daughter of Justice, that is Nemesis. It is characterised by a lively and austere rhythm, fitting to the content of the poetical text as a glorifying invocation to a goddess that arouses emotions of fear and respect.

The surviving musical texts do not include an important piece of the ancient Greek music, which was related with bacchanal worship, having an intense dionysian character. In this piece, dedicated to the cloven-hoofed god Pan, there is attempted by Lyravlos an approach to that style.
